Bee bearding How this man attracts thousands of wild bees on to his face and body and lives to tell
Bee bearding How this man attracts thousands of wild bees on to his face and body and lives to tell Hanging out with a swarm of bees may seem unusual to some, however for this beekeeper it’s a dream come true. Bui Duy Nhat happily posed for photos without any protective gear, apart from over his ears, while thousands of wild bees crawled over his face and body. Nhat can gather the wild bees in about 20 minutes; he can even talk and move while covered in the tiny creatures. The 41-year-old is known as one of the only specialists in Vietnam who is adept at the unusual practice of bee bearding. He attracts thousands of the flying insects at the Nua Ngam commune in Dien Bien province by keeping the colony’s queen bee close by, with the bees then landing on his body in clusters. Nhat’s passion for beekeeping began in 1993, when he began interacting with the creatures to learn more about their characteristics and behaviour. So while others like to relax by meeting up with family and friends, it seems Nhat clearly prefers the company of bees.
