Believed to be hand-picked for their looks, Pyongyang's female traffic police are a familiar sight at intersections around the capital, where traffic volumes have noticeably increased in recent years. To land the prestigious job of being a traffic officer in the country, it helps to be tall, beautiful and female. Traffic girls are perhaps the most iconic symbols of the capital though they can also be found in other cities throughout North Korea. As well as directing vehicles through Pyongyang, the traffic girls customarily give a crisp salute to passing military and government officials.
